"A tea set has only one teapot but several teacups, so a man can have multiple wives. That's our tradition," the village chief told me while I was filming in a Naxi village in southwest China.
Conversations in the village introduced me to local beliefs about marriage that became the starting point for the film. The chief also shared the story of a bride who reportedly fled nearly 5,000 kilometers on her wedding day. That moment inspired me to create Runaway Bride, a short film exploring the tension between tradition and women's autonomy.
Serving as the director, performer, and editor, I created the film as both a narrative and a reflection on how cinema can question inherited beliefs rather than simply document them. After its online release, the film reached more than 10,000 viewers and sparked conversations about gender equality and cultural traditions.
